EFS Refrigerated Freight Report

Overview & Projections

The peak holiday season has arrived, bringing a surge in market volatility as tender rejection rates climb above 22%. Significant shifts are evident across major markets including Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; Ontario, California; and Chicago, with Dallas currently experiencing the most substantial uptick. The reefer market is particularly volatile, with rejection rates hitting their highest levels since 2022, even as tender volumes remain lower than in the previous three years. As capacity continues to decline week over week, expect spot market volatility to be highest for team loads and long-haul shipments of 800 miles or more over the next two weeks, largely driven by drivers preferring local to mid-haul routes to stay closer to home.

.

Arizona

Needs Southern California to settle down and balance out before produce areas can restore coverage.

California (Northern)

Securing carriers won’t be as difficult as Southern parts. Carriers are moving south as rates rise.

California (Southern)

Rising load volumes and carriers taking time off will cause turbulence. Long haul and team rates are rising. Multi picks will cost a premium.

Carolinas

Ther region will compete with Florida and Georgia. Columbia and Charlotte carriers will take more effort to secure.

Eastern United States

East coast rates will rise and remain higher than usual throughout the winter months. Similar trends are transpiring in the Northeast.

Florida (Northern)

Rates are rising around the Savannah and Miami ports. Southern Georgia and Florida will lose coverage day to day.

Florida (Southern)

Always becomes very challenging around the holidays. Limited availability at the end of the week.

Georgia

Rates are rising around the Savannah and Miami ports. Southern Georgia and Florida will lose coverage day to day.

Idaho

Will remain challenging this week. Anticipate longer deadheads from neighboring states.

Midwest

Outbound volumes are declining and carriers will scatter. Southern Ohio, Northern Michigan, Central Indiana, Chicago, and Wisconsin are tight.

New York

Buffalo, Rochester, and Syracuse are limited. Loans remaining on the east side will be expensive.

Oregon/Washington

Starting to notice capacity strengthening which is a great sign. Shouldn’t hold for weekend shipment but can assist next week.

Texas

Market conditions are tightening statewide. Dallas is becoming even more constricted. Expect elevated costs to persist.
