Overview & Projections
Carriers are remaining cautious as winter weather continues to hinder the freight market. Four out of the past six years have dealt with winter storms that brough widespread market turbulence, and Fern is proving to be the most disruptive event since 2021. Currently, tender rejection rates are exceeding 22% as several areas remain constricted. Adding to the disruption, a bomb cyclone hit the East Coast over the weekend. North Carolina was hit the hardest, with Charlotte accumulating eleven inches of snow. As a result, rates across the Southeast and out of the Northeast are expected to remain inflated.
Furthermore, the upcoming holiday is driving specific market shifts. Florida will experience increased load volumes and elevated freight demanded as Valentine’s Day flower shipments rise sharply over the next couple of weeks. This seasonal rush places high demand on capacity to ensure timely delivery. Consequently, outbound rates moving from Florida to the Midwest and Northeast will cost a premium during this period.
Arizona
Carriers are taking advantage and quoting high. Won’t change until SoCal capacity can assist.
California (Northern)
Northern parts are strengthening and Central California is neutral. Quality time of year to secure trucks.
California (Southern)
Rates are remaining inflated. Carrier coverage is fluctuating day to day. Stronger earlier in the week.
Carolinas
Accumulating snow will keep drivers off of the roads until better conditions arise.
Eastern United States
Outbound rates won’t improve until additional coverage is willing to move this direction. Similar trends are occurring in the Northeast.
Florida (Northern)
Weather affected Northern Georgia over the weekend, and Florida is presenting elevated shipments. Anticipate higher costs until volumes level out.
Florida (Southern)
Flower shipments are on the rise the next couple weeks. Rates will elevate as a result.
Georgia
Weather affected Northern Georgia over the weekend, and Florida is presenting elevated shipments. Anticipate higher costs until volumes level out.
Idaho
Consistent carriers are slowly becoming easier to secure. Watch for the area to move in a positive direction.
Midwest
Cold temps and limited availability are creating a challenging market. Once better weather arrives, it will enhance the region.
New York
Securing quality carriers will remain a challenge. Competition is rising statewide.
Oregon/Washington
Holding onto positive momentum and one of the few stable markets. Reviewing rates wouldn’t hurt as availability heightens.
Texas
Warmer weather is helping road conditions; however, all significant markets are limited outside of Austin.
