Overview & Projections
As the year begins, reefer coverage is working to rebound, though a full recovery will take some time. Following a peak rejection rate of 23% on Christmas Eve, the market is slowly stabilizing, with rates currently sitting at 18%. This figure remains higher than in previous years, as January 2025 saw rates of 16%, compared to 10.5% in 2024 and just 5.5% in 2023. Looking further ahead, the market is expected to tighten overall in 2026 relative to recent trends.
Fortunately recovery efforts this week should be aided by milder weather, enticing carriers back onto the road — a stark contrast to last year’s winter when storms severely limited capacity. While scattered coverage is a standard occurence following the holidays and typically requires a few weeks to organize, you should expect higher rates to persist in the Northeast and Upper Midwest for the time being.
.
Arizona
There is potential for availability to strengthen this week. Comparing quotes day to day is beneficial.
California (Northern)
Rain and flood watches are occurring statewide. Outbound volumes are minimal which will aid spot market pricing.
California (Southern)
Heavy rains and flooding are occurring statewide. Carriers will likely move to Arizona in search of freight. Road closures can occur as well.
Carolinas
Quality opportunity to secure coverage. Stability is present and will hold.
Eastern United States
East coast rates will rise and remain higher than usual throughout the winter months. Similar trends will transpire in the Northeast.
Florida (Northern)
Both states are noticing improvements. Good time to negotiate with carriers as the market shifts.
Florida (Southern)
Following the holidays coverage will become easier to secure. Expect this to persist in January.
Georgia
Both states are noticing improvements. Good time to negotiate with carriers as the market shifts.
Idaho
Longer deadheads are prevalent but can gain strength throughout the month.
Midwest
Now that peak fall commodities have diminished, consistency will develop. Wisconsin and Chicago areas are the toughest parts for now.
New York
Upstate New York is more limited. The Hudson Valley is better but not at its usual capacity.
Oregon/Washington
Eastern parts will hold demanding conditions. Capacity will fluctuate but should start improving if weather cooperates.
Texas
Anticipate tighter conditions in majority of state. Austin in the only area with positive coverage.
