EFS Refrigerated Freight Report

Overview & Projections

As we approach Thanksgiving week, the freight market is expected to tighten further. We’ve already seen spot rates begin to climb, especially on the West Coast. This is due to a combination of new CDL regulations and drivers taking off time for the holiday. As a result, shipments from the West Coast to the East Coast will come at a premium.

Be aware that cargo theft and fraud typically increase during the holidays as the freight market gets tighter. It’s crucial to continue vetting carriers and hiring reputable ones. The most commonly targeted goods are food and drinks, electronics, miscellaneous items, and auto parts.

Expect rates inconsistencies over the next few weeks. Rates will rise this week, but we anticipate a quick capacity rebound as we head into December. Following this, coverage will likely tighten again toward the end of the year and into January.

Arizona

Produce volumes are rising and shippers are trying to get caught up. Southwestern Arizona will present the most challenging market.

California (Northern)

Central and Northern California will bring volatility to the market. Carriers will be more particular with long haul shipments.

California (Southern)

Weekend shipments and terms will cost a pretty penny. Be wary of fraudulent activity.

Carolinas

Scatters coverage will persist. Engaging with carriers early can aid rate spikes.

Eastern United States

Region is remaining consistent. Market rates and carrier reliability shouldn’t alter much. The Northeast is matching this trend.

Florida (Northern)

Outside of Atlanta, Georgia appears to be a stronger market than Florida. Southern and Central Florida will be tighter than northern Florida.

Florida (Southern)

Carriers will have leverage and use it to their advantage. Holiday coverage can get tricky.

Georgia

Outside of Atlanta, Georgia appears to be a stronger market than Florida. Southern and Central Florida will be tighter than northern Florida.

Idaho

Limited capacity will hold until neighboring states are able to maintain better coverage.

Midwest

All areas will likely fluctuate this week. Try locking in carriers early this week as weekend coverage will get competitive.

New York

Syracuse and Buffalo can get challenging. The Hudson Valley is the opposite, strong and favorable.

Oregon/Washington

Rates will remain steep around the holidays. Anticipate challenging market conditions.

Texas

South Texas is presenting better coverage than anticipated. However, will tighten later in the week. Dallas will be tighter as well.
